Hedda Gabler

Adapted by Andrew McIlroy from Ibsen's original text

Directed by: Andrew McIlroy

Performed: 13-23 February 2002 in the "Les Bains", 34 rue Berthelot, 1190 Bruxelles.

Information on the play:

The Irish Theatre Group’s ambitious production of Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler enhanced the Group’s reputation of bringing the best of Irish theatre, and Irish versions of the classics, to Brussels audiences.

Hedda Gabler, in a new version by Andrew McIlroy, was perhaps the ITG's most ambitious work. It is ambitious in that Andrew adapted the play to an Irish setting, with the aim also of creating an idiom and an atmosphere that is clear to modern sensibilities.

It was doubly ambitious in that a non-theatre venue has been chosen: the Bains :: Connective is an artistic co-operative located in an Art Deco swimming pool in the Brussels commune of Forêt/Vorst close to Gare de Midi.

This presented both an artistic and practical challenge, but brought huge opportunities to attract a new audience and to connect with the Brussels contemporary arts scene in a wholly new way.

The ITG thanks its sponsors and supporters for their contributions to Hedda Gabler.
