The Mai

Written by: Marina Carr

Directed by: Richard Wells

Performed: 18-22 January 2000 in "Les Tréteaux", Rue de Laeken 159, 1000 Bruxelles

Information on the play:
June 1979. As the play opens "The Mai" of the title, deserted by her composer husband 5 years previously is anxiously awaiting his return. The play then records the events of that summer and the following one. The conversations and stories of the seven women, the history of their family and their broken and cruel love is remembered, recounted and relived by the Mai's eldest daughter Millie. Millie fuses past and present, history and love into a story as intimate, unique, disturbing, affectionate and recognisable as all family stories.
