The Yard
Written & Directed by: Loretta Stanley
Performed: 20-24 May 2003 in the Studio Theatre in Schaerbeek
Information
on the play:
The Yard is compelling original theatre that takes a frank and
frequently funny look at life in an inner city school where the protagonists
grapple with change - inside and outside the staff room. It makes great theatre,
ideal for The Warehouse Studio space in Brussels.
The new school principal, an ambitious young "buck" back from the States, tries
to modernise and enlighten. In the process he upsets a string of apple carts,
leading in one situation to a full-blown riot! Amidst it all, he and others in
the staff room are somehow forced to confront both demons of the past and
challenges of the future.
This play is about the power of friendships, and the drama of relationships.
About pride and... prejudice, about conflict and reconciliation. Writer-director
Loretta Stanley draws a compassionate picture of real people dealing with real
issues and somehow, perhaps despite themselves, coming out the better for it.
The result is powerful, engaging drama.
In recent years the Irish Theatre Group has excited Brussels audiences with
daring theatre, adapting great classics like Hedda
Gabler and Tartuffe to an Irish context
while also encouraging and nurturing its own writing talent with
Compensations and, now, The Yard.
As so often with the ITG, the cast includes both tried and tested performers
such as Liz Ross, Suzanne Healy and Nikki Johnston, as well as fresh faces like
Alan Welby and Colum Hatchell, bringing new talents to Brussels audiences.
